Local History Films at the Darby & Joan Club prove to be a hit!

June 5, 2014

On Wednesday 4th June Midland Film and Art were asked to showcase a variety of local history films to educate and entertain the members of the Darby & Joan Club that meet regularly at Overend Methodist Mission, Banners Lane, Cradley.

MFAA presented four short films that rainy afternoon starting with the extended version of 'We Will remember Them' introduced by author Terry Evans. It tells the story of Cradley's War Memorial which was followed by a short documentary about the 'Cradley Ex-Services Association and Cradley Royal British Legion'. The film focuses on the members of the association and the members each give an account of their lives both now and then.

The third film showcased was 'The Story of Joseph Tranter' which is a movie taken from Cradley Heath Male Voice Choir - Centenary Concert (2012). The film shows how Joe was the first man from Cradley to be killed in action during the Great War.
To wrap things up 'Funeral of Sgt Tyler' was played which tells the story of Sgt Tyler who tragically lost his life not in combat but as a result of being a soldier in WW1. This was filmed in 2010 as part of the Cradley Then & Now Heritage Project.  The project included 54 short movies covering the history of Cradley dating from neolithic times to the present day.

Midland Film and Art

Midland Film and Art is a membership club where people can enjoy screenings of films or view artwork and crafts that would otherwise not be shown in mainstream cinemas or exhibitions, or be available locally. These shows usually have an educational aim, introducing new audiences to different audiovisual works through screening and display, encouraging participation in arts and crafts. A common feature that may characterize a Midland Film and Art meeting is that they either begin with an introduction to the audience and/or end with the promotion of a discussion about the film/art, where assistants, organizers and sometimes the filmmakers/artists themselves, exchange their views.
